What would you expect a female guest to wear to your wedding

Tue Sep 28, 2010 9:53 pm

I am attending my first wedding in November and I would love to wear a long formal type dress, My question is.. what would you like/not like female guests to wear to your wedding?

I guess it depends how formal the wedding is. Mine is a semi formal event so I guess either a skirt and top or nice dress. Long dress may be a bit too formal, but I suppose it depends on the style of the dress you want to wear etc.

Does it state a dress code on the invitation? Also, is it a day or evening wedding and where is it being held, ie reception venue/restaurant/vineyard etc? I find that I have different opinions based on location, time of day etc.

I think that sounds perfect! If you can't go home between ceremony and reception, you could always jazz up the outfit by changing your jewellery and shoes for night time. Maybe even a cute little jacket too. It's easy enough to keep those things in your car.

I would just say - no denim!

Did you have a particular dress in mind? If so, post pics - WE LOVE PICS :D

Maxi dress is the way to go, you can really dress them up or down. In a nice colourful summer print no white, cream or ivory

I actually have found the best cream coloured maxi! If only I was game enough to risk my life by wearing it to a wedding! haha

Don't wear cream- massive faux pas.

If your DH is a groomsman what he is wearing can give you an indication of the tone of the wedding. If he's wearing a traditional suit and tie then you should wear a dress that is below the knee or longer. And as a PP said- definitely not too much boobage.

I think the nice beach type summery long dresses with some great jewlerry to me white seems like you are part of the formalities.

I think you should ask for clarification on the dress code if you're not sure, but what you've suggested sounds fine in theory. :D

I think a maxi dress would look fine, but would probably go for a patterned print rather than a plain colour. I think a plain colour might look too "bridesmaid-y" IYKWIM?

I agree, but go for the pattern and avoid the cream. I also cant stand the really short cocktail dresses that are more like belts.

Maxi's are always a fave - they can be dressed up or down to suit the venue.

Otherwise, go with your instincts! If you have a dress you love, wear it and dress it up and down depending on the style! I have a full-length black one-shouldered Grecian dress with a sequin band under the bust that I just love. I always feel its a little dressy, so I wear flat sandals and more 'casual' jewellery (bracelets and hoop earrings) and it brings it down just enough :P Anyhoo, good luck and if you're still not sure - post pics!!
