Dress Sizes

Tue Jan 11, 2011 8:18 pm

This is going to sound ridiculous but I really want to know before I go dress shopping! How different are wedding dress sizes in comparison to every day sizes? I'm really paranoid, I know the size doesn't matter as long as I feel happy in the dress but I want to prepare myself. In 2008 when I went dress shopping for my mums wedding I was a 14-16 in every day clothes but tried on size 18 bridesmaid dresses and some didnt even fit (ie. still too tight!). I was pretty devestated purely because I wasn't expecting that, so I'm just curious whether wedding dress sizes are 'normal' so to speak. If not, at least I can expect to be a bigger size that normal! (I'm doing weight watchers and have lost 6kg but I have a way to go before I'm happy).

I do know this is a silly question, but we're all entitled to one right?

I am a 10/12 and found that when I was trying on dresses by Henry Roth I was pretty much that size.

I have not tried on any other designers though :)

I'm a size 14-16 and they wanted to order my dress in a size 20!! I ended up talking them down to an 18 (I would've preferred a 16 at the absolute biggest..) because I'm losing weight; so we'll see.

I will say it was a bit depressing, but it's extra motivating for me and my personal trainer ;)

ETA: My dress is a Maggie Sottero; corset back.

I am normally a size 10 but was size 6 in Henry Roth. My bridesmaid is normally 10 - 12 and was a size 6 in Alfred Angelo.

The Henry Roth dress I tried on was an 18. I'm usually a 16 on top and an 18 on the bottom, but the dress was perfect. I ordered it in a 16 because I will lose weight before the wedding and I anticipate it will have to be taken in to at least a 14.

I have tried in Alfred Angelo BM dresses for my friends wedding, and the dress was slim fitting and I needed a 20W to fit my backside in, which absolutely killed me.

I found that more slim fit gowns, you tend to have to go up a few sizes while more floaty gowns tend to be more true to size or smaller.

It depends on what brand you buy.

My dress is an aussie brand so I fit in a 12 fine (my reg size)

HOWEVER

I almost gave up on dress shopping because some brands called me a size 18!!! 8O 8O 8O Know that it is NOT you, a lot of wedding dress shops go by stupid sizing. No wonder so many women dont eat leading up to their wedding...

The one ive bought is an 8. Im usually an 8-10, so thats pretty normal for me.

I did try on a 12 though that was VERY loose from the waist but VERY tight from the hips, the sales assistant told me that I would need it custom made as an 8 at the waist and a 14 at the hips if I were to order it. So it depends on the designer.

I was a 12 in normal clothes and went down to a 10 in Maggie Sottero dresses (I think they use USA sizes).

Eta: I got a corset back dress.

I went shopping today, am normally a size 12 on top 14 bottom and was trying on size 18's! Felt a little limited and many dress styles I was not able to try on due to them being small. And I'm not huge.
My theory ended up being if I looked tiny, thats all that mattered.
P.S. Try on lots of different styles, lace ups are your friend :D

I'm exactly the same!

But I tried on other 14's and they fit too (different brands) but my Maggie is one size down from "normal" clothing.

Different designers will be different sizes as the girls said.
I'm normally a 16-18 and my gown was a 20. (I bought off the rack, and ended up losing weight so thank goodness for the corset back!)
Corset back is your friend :)

Im a 16-18 and the dress i have is a 20 i think but 20 to 22 fits me in wedding gowns to be honest I dont care about sizings if it fits it fits and im not stereotyped cause of sizing . I am chubby but i love corsets style dresses cause even though mine is a 20 i still have alot of weight to lose so the corset is nice and tight. The only thing I have found lacking in big dresses is that I dont want a friggin a line dress i was a fitedd kind of one and every shop has been saying sorry we only do them for slim brides argghhhh

Cuddly, have a look at bands Nicolina (Aussie designer) and Angeline. Mine was an Angeline and was slim fitting,

I know Henry Roth do their dresses all in up to size 30. I tried a number of Henry Roths on when I was shopping and they do have some loevly and affordable gowns.

From their website perhaps Georgina, Iris, 21521, Ginger they are all slimmer fitting gowns (including trumpet skirts) with corset backs. 21875 is a slim a-line, very pretty but still an a-line. Horton, Ina, Glenda and Hayley are also slim dresses and pretty but no idea what the back is like!

Alfred Angelo also do a lot of plus-size gowns in slim designs. I thought Maggie Sotterros were available to larger sizes too?
