Ring repairs - recommendations?

Sun Feb 27, 2011 7:42 pm

I somehow managed to bend my engagement ring band this weekend. :(

It's pushed in on one edge, so is kind of in a half moon shape, well not quite but u get the drift, but it's bad

I live in Brisbane so will need to find someone to fix it

Question is, the ring is 50 years old (grandmas) so has extra meaning and is completely irreplaceable.

If anyone can suggest any jewellers that specialize in this or which ever please let me know, and anyone to avoid at all costs!

Any suggestions / help will be much appreciated as Im sad :(

Aww, that really sucks, hun. :( I can't recommend anyone, sorry, but just wanted to say that I hope you find someone that can repair it.

I have found Stephen Dibbs Jewellers to be fantastic. I have only used the store at Cleveland but they also have one at Holland Park.

I will have to try and get out to the Stephen Dibb place, I don't live far from the Cleveland one but I doubt I can get there as I only have a car sometimes.

On Thursday I was thinking of going to all the jewellers at Carindale Westfield.

If anyone knows of any of the chain places to avoid at all costs, please let me know.

Or if any of the below list would be worth a shot first off.

Adorne
Angus & Coote
Anthonys Jewellers
Butterfly Silver
Diamonds International
Equip
Giorgios Designs
Goldmark
Kazazz Silver Jewellery
Michael Hill Jeweller
Prouds
Salera's Jewell Masters
Wallace Bishop
Watch Works Australia
Zamel's

I have rung Wallace Bishop and Clayfield Jewellers.

To get the back half of the ring redone (new band rather than just straighten it out), possibly having to re-do the front half of the ring as it has been bent slightly (the front half of the ring is gold kind of cross hatches? you can see through it side on, with platinum on top with a pattern and then 2 little diamonds on each side, with two bigger ones in the centre). Re-doing the claws (8 of them) just to be safe as it is 50 years old and I have no idea when it was last done.

Cleaning and valuing it.

It might cost around $1200, but worst case I was told by Wallace Bishop - $2500 ... as expected it is hard to tell without them seeing it, it could be a lot worse than I think, or could be better.

I have emailed pics to Stephen Dibbs after speaking with them, so will see what they have to say.

I'd avoid all chain stores, and go with an independent jeweller.

I had thought that, but thought there may have been a few that were ok

We have a family jeweler at Mt Gravatt, just across the road from Garden City, his business is called European Jewellers 3349 3007, he is really lovely and is making my wedding band and also melting down FH's parents wedding bands to make FH's band and reasonably priced too.

I spoke to the lady from stephen dibbs and will try to get tree on Wednesday - so long as my boss let's me go a little early

They charge $250 for the back half of band to be replaced, 18 CT
$250 for 12 claws
$60 for rhodium plating

Does that sound around the normal price range for stuff?
