Photobooths - tacky or fun?

Wed May 11, 2011 10:46 am

I am tossing up as to whether to get a photobooth or not, and would like to throw the question out there to those who have it or have been to a wedding with it, and those who don't like them and why!

My future Mother in Law and my mum both think it's a tacky idea, and said it will distract the wedding focus. She said it's a waste of money and not to get it, but I really wanted one.

Having thought about it more, I can see their point, but i also went to a bridal expo recently where they had them, and my fiance and I had fun in them! He's easy either way on it, but has left the call to me.

What are people's thoughts on them???

I really like the idea!! If I went to a wedding that had one, I'd be stoked!! :D

Having said that, our wedding will be more formal and I don't think a photobooth would be very appropriate for the kind of reception we have planned.

I think they do have potential to be tacky if not done properly, but most of them these days are so professional that it shouldn't be a worry.

Not tacky!! They are usually out of the way so wouldn't be a visual distraction. I think they are lots of fun, gives you some great candid shots of your guests and gives them something nice to take home..

I still have the photos from a friends photobooth proudly displayed from 2.5 years ago!

If you can afford to do it - DO IT!!

We recently went to a wedding that had one and everyone had the best fun!!

They are great and not only do you get a rather original guest book but you do end up with some hilarious photos that you would never have gotten with just an average photographer..

BEST FUN EVER!!

I would like one as well - they look like a lot of fun. I do agree though that maybe they are not necessarily appropriate for some receptions (e.g. a strictly formal black or white tie affair with classical music and ballroom dancing) but for a lot of us I think they are brilliant and a wonderful souvenier of the day.

FUN!!! if you're concerned, put it to the side of the reception so that it's not distracting to other guests?

fun definately, we are having one and suggesting our guests use it while we are getting our photos taken after the ceremony, to give them something to do along with drinking and eating whilst waiting for us, we have a family member who will take the photos for us and we have collected the props.

I'm going to be unpopular, but IMHO I think they're a bit tacky. Fun for a party, but inappropriate for a wedding.

Having said that, my own wedding will be mostly family and family friends, and any younger people there are not the sort who would particularly appreciate something like this.

If its one of those which spit out a strip of photos from the booth after each "set" of people, then I think its a great idea.

Then you can ask your guests to snip off the last photo of the strip (whether its a terrible one or not!) and paste it into a blank guestbook (which you'll have nearby), and then they can write a message to you and your groom/husband next to their photo and they get to keep the rest of the photos.

Doubles as a nice momento for you as well as a wedding favour for your guests :)

I wouldn't say they are tacky, but I think they are way to expensive so I wouldn't consider one personally

I can see both sides to this. It can come across as tacky but from most photobooths I've seen and the pics from them, the guests have a had a lot of fun and enjoyed it. If your wedding is a formal event, black tie etc, then of course it's not appropriate for that theme.

What about a polaroid camera? Could be cheaper but you could still give guests a photo and also put one in a guest book

I agree with one poster above who said they think it's fun, but may not suit every wedding style. I would be kind of tempted to do one as I know particularly our friends would be totally in to it (although I somewhat dread to see what photos they would take, I'm sure there'd be at least one set of buttocks in there somewhere) but our wedding is going to be kind of like a sophisticated soiree so I'm not sure it really fits. I say go for it :)
