where to find 1950 full skirt wedding dress

Mon Nov 19, 2012 9:14 am

Hi Ladies, I am a BM for one of my firends wedding and she has asn extremly tight budget, she is looking for a 1950's inspired full skirt dress with capped sleeves for under the $1000 range.

She loves this Wendy Makin dress but for $3000 is not an option, she doesn't want a Chinese knock off either, has anyone seen anything similar to this dress whether new or second hand?

I would suggest checking out some of the gowns on Etsy and also local salon's sale racks.

If she is willing to go shorter Dolly Couture has some great options.

Also try Still White, I Do Gowns and Savvy Brides for second hand gowns. I would have had a browse but no idea what size your friend is. And off course keep an eye on the Wendy Makin Clearance Gallery.

The simple fact is though with the amount of material and lace in a dress like the Wendy Makin you will struggle to find something under $1,000 unless you go counterfeit or second-hand. I think Etsy is your best bet or a dressmaker.

My friend wants a cream or blue 1950's inspired and it cannot be strapless and must have a full skirt and under $1000, I am finding all these requirements a little difficult to find anything nice but i am looking :)

she is a 12 :)

Don't forget any strapless gown can have sleeves added as well...

I'd look into this one, brand new by Brides Desire and simply add the sleeves if it were me...

Otherwise
Henry Roth (I would know this one down further, I don't think it would have been over $2,000 new.... I could be wrong.
ELizabeth Devarga for under $1,000 (its a sample) is still a good buy...
This is only $150.00 - adding a hoop should push that skirt out a lot.

She has put in a very tall order then. Unless you can get an ex-sample on a big reduction you will need a dress maker whether it be local or a Chinese ripoff. Its just not feasible to get the detail she is wanting with the price point.

Thanks misspony, there are some nice dresses there, no prices are listed on there unfortunately but i have sent an email.

I heard back from Heather Selleck and her prices start from $2500 so it would in some cases be cheaper to buy one in store afterall

ok so this is what she wants

dresses - i don't want to spend over $1000! We didn't set firm limits. If I could get a sleeved version in an antique cream colour, I'd be happy. Else I'll go for a fishtail ball gown in a blue or a cream, and also be happy.

Definitely ask a dressmaker for quotes. I had a simple dress made with lace and poly satin for $800. Unless she wants a lot of corsetry and beading and ruching etc I think the $1000 price point could be manageable. She could ask about getting the full skirted effect using a cheap hoop from eBay rather than having multiple layers of netting and tulle built into the dress to save on the cost perhaps? Fabric can be bought wholesale through the dressmaker or on sale for cheap. My cheap $12/meter lace looked pretty good after all :)

I know that this isnt exactly what she is after, and I think its a little over the $1000 mark, but it doesnt have alot of details, apart from the lace and a dressmaker may be able to copy it a little more cheaply.

Another suggestion could be to go into Wendy Makin on Collins Street and look at some of the other cheaper designs that they stock. Watters is definately more affordable and the girls there will not push you at all! Even if it still ends up being out of the price range, at least she can get an idea and then perhaps look at finding a second hand one.. and yes def keep an eye out for the sales on her webpage!

EDIT: BTW I tried on the above dress and it was gorgeous but totally drowned out my 159cm frame! You could tell that it was made a lot more cheaply than Wendy Makin. Kinda almost scratchy. So that would also be something to think about too..

How about Dolly Couture? They're an American company that only makes vintage inspired dresses and their range is all under $1000.

This is a full skirt style with lace sleeves:
http://dollycouture.com/collection/pink-label/the-walnut-creek.html

Or if your friend prefers her arms completely covered there's always this one:
http://dollycouture.com/collection/pink-label/beverlywood-vintage-wedding-dress.html

The length of the gowns can be customised if she thinks they're too short.

Customs may want to charge import taxes so your friend should find out first or she may get a rude shock! Australia Post may be able to help with an estimate.

Dolly Couture don't quote delivery rates on their site either, so she'd need to contact them direct to see how much extra this will add to the cost.
