Has anyone on here had a dress handmade by family, friends or a dressmaker? I haven't been able to find anything I'm 100% happy with so mum and I have had a play with some calico and we've come up with something pretty much perfect. If we make it up and I'm happy with it, it'll probably only come to about $100!!!
One of DH's work colleages was married last year, and her dress was made entirely by her grandmother. It was an absolutely beautiful dress, and there was no way to tell it wasn't a label dress from a wedding gown store.
If you have the time and skill definitely give it a go! At the end of the day if you decide you aren't happy with it, you still won't be out of pocket for much, but if you love it then you have saved yourself a fortune!
I am odd shaped and had a fairly specific idea about the type of material I wanted and there was no way on earth I was going to find something off the rack. I came to the conclusion that even zero love couldn't do it as there was no pic to copy and their materials are different. I saw a dress I really liked the style of IRL and found the picture to base something on. I went to a dressmaker friend who had just made her daughter's dress and does alterations for a bridal shop (I didn't know that part when I asked her) and she said she could make anything. So happy. Anyway once I found my exact material that I had imagined in my head I decided that it was a dressmaker all the way. She has taken my measurements and will start my calico one this week. If you guys are interested I could show a few pics along the way (sorry to hijack)
well I've only just started getting my dress fittings as the dressmaker doesn't make her dresses too early as people's size changes a lot over the last 6 months in her experience. I would've loved to have had it finished ages before this, but she was right. I have been steadily losing weight and am a different shape now to 6 months ago.
Anyway, I've got pics!!!!

this is my petticoat - its a cadbury purple poly cotton and purple tulle with 3 layers
Cheers to you for being so talented. Why not do it on the cheap, think of the extra money you can spend on cocktails on your honeymoon! Well, that is just one idea! I love to purple tulle too, I was thinking of having a coloured under coat too, exactly for the same reason as you, for a flash of colour.
I thought I'd be able to find what I wanted, but when it came to the crunch the dresses I kept choosing were a bit too bridesmaidy. When I tried that style of dress on it my picture it was near perfect but I'd like a few alternations to it.
