Handmade dresses

Mon Jun 08, 2009 1:03 pm

Has anyone on here had a dress handmade by family, friends or a dressmaker? I haven't been able to find anything I'm 100% happy with so mum and I have had a play with some calico and we've come up with something pretty much perfect. If we make it up and I'm happy with it, it'll probably only come to about $100!!!

One of DH's work colleages was married last year, and her dress was made entirely by her grandmother. It was an absolutely beautiful dress, and there was no way to tell it wasn't a label dress from a wedding gown store.

I just can't justify spending thousands of dollars on a dress when I can have it made to size for a few hundred....

If you have the time and skill definitely give it a go! At the end of the day if you decide you aren't happy with it, you still won't be out of pocket for much, but if you love it then you have saved yourself a fortune! :D

It seems much more personal to have a dress made by someone you know. Lovely idea.

I am odd shaped and had a fairly specific idea about the type of material I wanted and there was no way on earth I was going to find something off the rack. I came to the conclusion that even zero love couldn't do it as there was no pic to copy and their materials are different. I saw a dress I really liked the style of IRL and found the picture to base something on. I went to a dressmaker friend who had just made her daughter's dress and does alterations for a bridal shop (I didn't know that part when I asked her) and she said she could make anything. So happy. Anyway once I found my exact material that I had imagined in my head I decided that it was a dressmaker all the way. She has taken my measurements and will start my calico one this week. If you guys are interested I could show a few pics along the way (sorry to hijack)

well I've only just started getting my dress fittings as the dressmaker doesn't make her dresses too early as people's size changes a lot over the last 6 months in her experience. I would've loved to have had it finished ages before this, but she was right. I have been steadily losing weight and am a different shape now to 6 months ago.

Anyway, I've got pics!!!!

This is her draft dress made with my lining material

The dressmaker is considering adding another layer of tulle on top of the current petticoat to fill out the dress more

Cheers to you for being so talented. Why not do it on the cheap, think of the extra money you can spend on cocktails on your honeymoon! Well, that is just one idea! I love to purple tulle too, I was thinking of having a coloured under coat too, exactly for the same reason as you, for a flash of colour.

Good luck with the progression.

I've decided to bite the bullet and get the lady that made both my sisters wedding dresses to make mine to. She's very inexpensive and very professional.

This is the dress she made for my sister

This is the style I've chosen

I thought I'd be able to find what I wanted, but when it came to the crunch the dresses I kept choosing were a bit too bridesmaidy. When I tried that style of dress on it my picture it was near perfect but I'd like a few alternations to it.

Ooo, love the pic of your dress! I'm sure it'll be fine if your sis was happy with her.
