The amazing awesome etsy thread!

Mon Oct 05, 2009 2:40 pm

I love etsy... Really. If I wasnt marrying D I would be marrying etsy! So I have been trawling etsy looking for interesting things and I keep finding these beautiful ideas that even though I dont think I would use them, I keep thinking... I bet someone on WC would... So I'm starting a thread in a hope that someone will find something wonderful for their wedding!!!

Some tips for finding great wedding stuff from the lovely Nikki who posted this back in July, She's a bit of an etsy fiend too! For the original thread please see here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=104858

"Okay so I've been asked a few times about using Etsy, seems people struggle to find things. Fair enough, it's not the most straight forward of things. And rather than give the lazy answer of 'just luck', I finally did a proper response in my Show and Tell. Thought it might be useful enough to post here.

Use LOTS of search terms. Like if you're looking for 'Bridal Lingerie', don't just type that in and hit search. Bridal, Wedding, Bride, Lingerie, Bra, Underwear, Satin, Silk, Blue... Think of materials, colours, different terms for the same thing. The more you bash in, the more will come up. Of course it helps if you have an idea of exactly what you want. One of the best ways to figure this one out is, as you browse, scroll down to the keywords below an item, that will give you a hint about which words bring up what you're looking for.

The other thing is skim the treasuries here. Some users create whole treasuries dedicated to bridal items they love. You might see something you love that's not quite right. Click on through anyway and check out the user's shop. There may be something exactly as you like it. Or you may be able to message them and ask for a custom item.

Speaking of customs. If you have an exact idea of what you want, but can't seem to locate it anywhere, try the alchemy. There you can create a request for a custom piece. Use an ace descriptive topic title. Also, be very specific when entering the key words. Again, think materials, think colous, think different terms. The more info, the easier an Etsy 'maker' will find your custom request. Again, think about the keywords and materials beneath an item for sale.

This one is going to sound ridiculously easy... USE CATERGORIES! That's how I've found most of my best crap. There's an entire main catergory dedicated to weddings. Here. The sub-catergories within it are hugely specific. Cake Toppers, Albums, Baskets, Invitations, Something Blue... Just browse them. Make some time and just keep clicking. Some of my favourite things have been found when not using the sub-catergories though. Keep flicking through the main catergory, it shows you the most recent additions. You'll most certainly stumble across something worth pausing for. Again, if it's not quite right, browse the seller's store or ask for a custom.

Oh and extra bonus (I forgot to add this to my S&T.) sign up for the newsletters. Okay so a newsletter a day can get tedious, but very, very often the admin sends out newsletters chockers with their favourite wedding picks. I've found a few favourite sellers like this. Even things that come from non-wedding newsletters might stand out to you as shower favours or decorations etc.

So, hopefully that helps someone."

Pleease feel free to post your etsy favs!

Do you mind if I copy and paste that into here? Maybe we could get the mods to do a merge?

I  Etsy!

I just bought a gorgeous hair comb from Etsy (for reception when I'm sick of my veil):

I also bought these gorgeous paper roses which are made from pages of romance novels - awwww. Such a cute idea! I'm now not sure if we'll use them in the wedding, as things have kind of moved on since I bought them, but I think I'll just keep them as ornaments in my house, they are really cute and make me feel happy:

Didn't realise there was quite so much. Want to know where any or all came from? Just ask, I'll look it up.

I too love etsy. What's the plastic thing to the left of the clutch? I can't quite tell what it is, is it to separate toes to paint your toenails?
