Renewing Passport

Wed Aug 04, 2010 4:49 pm

Can anyone please direct me to the exact link I need to go to for renewing my passport in my married name?

I still haven't done it... and I just remembered it's free for the 12 months after you get married.

Do I need to get a new photo taken, or is that optional?? Thanks :heart: I'm confused by what I'm reading on the govt website.

Hi Porcelain:

You need to do a full new application. It says on the application how old the photo can be. Mine was too old so I had to get a new one done. Then when you take it to the post office just tell them it's because you got married and changed your name etc etc and they don't charge you.

Thank you girls :e_hug:

I'm definitely getting a new photo. Last one was taken in 2003 and I looked terrible, like I was attending a funeral or something 8O hardly even looks like me, lol.

Oh, another question - do I need to take the original marriage cert, or is a photocopy signed by a JP enough?

Yep you definitely need the originals of EVERYTHING, the post office will then photocopy!! I got stuck when I only took a certified copy of my Citizenship cert, they refused to process my application until I came back with the original... so frustrating!

I was just at the post office on Thursday to submit my application form.

To change your passport in your married name, you need to complete the 'new passport application' form for Adult (this includes getting someone to fill in the guarantor section and sign your photo and showing all your documents).

Documents you will need to take can include.......
* Australian birth certificate or Australian citizenship certificate
* marriage certificate
* change of name certificate
* birth certificate (if not born in Australia)
* your current Australian passport
* drivers licence
* medicare card

The documents above are the ones I took to the passport 'interview'. Read the application form thoroughly. When I was at the post office a few weeks ago, there was someone who was doing their passport and the applicant was told she would have to come back because she didn't bring all her documents and also the photos were not up to the specifications listed on the application form 8O

Definitely take originals (better be safe than sorry). The application form says to take the original and a photocopy (most post offices should have a photocopier.....).

You can make an passport interview for Australia Post through this website:

From https://www.passports.gov.au/Web/FAQ.aspx#faq10
A gratis passport (i.e. free of charge) will only be issued if you apply for your new passport within 12 months of your marriage. The passport being replaced should have at least 2 years validity remaining otherwise you will be unable to replace the gratis document using the streamlined renewal process. In these circumstances, the new passport would only be issued up to the date of validity of the current passport. In all other circumstances, the full fee will have to be paid for a new passport.

Hi Girls

I am currently doing my new passport application.

Do i have to get a change of name certificate to use my married name or can i just use my marriage certificate.
My marriage certificate has been fine for everything else including tax office and liscence.

Marriage certificate is fine as long as it has been issued by Birth, Deaths and Marriages (in Australia).

If you have had any name changes between birth and marriage, you should take it along.

I have my new passport now, so woo hoo.
Just make sure all your documents are the originals. It'll save you lots of hassle and extra trips.

Just in realtion to the questions, where is the resitration number on the certificate. (located in Vic)

I have a number up the top with registered next to it,
and then a serial number down the bottom...
