Name change what do I do?

Mon Oct 13, 2008 3:37 pm

OK so I am now married what am I suppose to do now re - name change

Has it automatically already legally changed or do I have to tell someone? and if so who?

I know the marriage certificate I signed on the day isn't the real one do I have to apply for a real one or do they just send me one?

I know I need the real certificate to change my name on bank accounts ect but am I fine to start calling myself mrs E and opening new things with that surname?

We received our official marriage certificate from Queensland registry a couple of weeks ago (about 4 weeks after our wedding).

The official certificate which is similar to a birth certificate is what you use to change everything. I haven't started changing everything yet, as we are moving at the very start of January, I thought it would be easier to change everything when we move :D

Would love someone's list of things that they had to change, so I don't forget stuff!

You ring up and change it. It is best to wait until you receive the certified copy of your certificate as most places require that as proof before they do it.

Funnily enough a lot of places don't need proof, just a phone call or letter (ATO is happy with just a phone call)

Once I had my official certificate (the one from BDM) I started by changing the "big" stuff first - like driver's licence and bank accounts. I went to most places in person with the original certificate (if you go in person with the original certificate, you shouldn't need any certified copies). Alot of places will let you do it over the phone which is handy.

You are still legally entitled to use your maiden name. What you are really doing is informing places that you wish to be known as "XXX MarriedName" from now on.

If you want to change your name on your passport, it's free if you do it within the first 12 months of your wedding date.

I have to have my real certificate which my celebrant sent in forms the day of our wedding, cause i gave him my forms at final meeting.

Everywhere you go will want a copy of this certificate or at least sight it. Only company i didnt need to show certificate was Budget Direct car insurance.

You can call yourself Mrs E but not for anything you need ID for until you have your ID changed :)
