Keep trying the shelters, they should have plenty of kittens in soon (kitten season coming up). Please try and avoid buying kittens from unregistered breeders, it encourages the practice of 'back yard breeding' (breeding animals purely for profit without concern for the health of the animal and their offspring).
its not free but the RSPCA puts down many many kittens each and every week... most kitties with RSPCA go for about $250 i think but thats fully vet checked and vaccinated, micro-chipped, desexed and some locations even give you a little pet pack with food and a collar too.
when desexing (over $100) and microchipping (about $50) and a vet check (anywhere from $50 up) and then vaccination ($$) is getting close to $250 anyway, why not save a little kitten from imminent death?
We got ours for $155 three months ago.
Little cutie, saved from the pound. We picked him up from the RSPCA and he's been bringing A LOT of joy to our lives.
