Wedding dress on a virgin blue flight

Sat Feb 20, 2010 12:05 pm

Hi all

Ive just booked our flights to Magnetic Island for our wedding in June. We're flying from Melbourne to Townsville with Virgin blue. Theres a fair few of us going up and we will be taking our 3 month old with pram etc... We have paid for extra luggage as well as carry on luggage, but I was just wondering if anyone else has done this trip with Virgin and how you went about taking your dress on the plane.

I have a heavily beaded bodice and sun-ray pleated shirt so i dont think it will go too well being folded up in the carry-on luggage part. Ive been told that sometimes they let you take your dress on board but wanted to know if you organise this before or just on the day.

Any advice would be awesome!!!

Cheers :)

I spoke to them yesterday, and they basically just relayed to me what is on their website:

Carry-on Baggage
What’s allowed

You may take, free of charge, baggage weighing up to 7 kg on board with you, which might consist of:

* 1 piece not exceeding dimensions of 23 cm in depth, 34 cm in height and 48 cm in length, (total linear dimensions equal to 105cm), and;
* 1 suit pack or garment bag, non rigid/unfolded not exceeding 11cm in depth x 60cm in width x 114cm in length (total linear dimensions equal to 185 cm), or another small bag or briefcase

The other option is checking it in, but I don't think I'm game to fly without it in my sight.

I have never flown with Virgin, but I would think that there would be someplace they could hang it for us.I'm just going to make sure I'm really nice to them on the day, and hopefully they will find somewhere to hang it, as there are no pressing facilities where we are going.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has actually flown with them and a dress to see if they helped out at all.

We flew from Sydney to Cairns for our wedding with Virgin and there isnt any hanging space.

The garment bag you are allowed to take on has dimensions that are smaller than a garment bag for a dress (ie the dress is too long) but as long as when its folded in half its not too thick and doesnt exceed the weight limit for a garment bag then it will be fine. We just folded it loosely in half and put it in the overhead compartment and made sure it was on top of anything else in there and that no other passengers touched that area. After a 3hr flight it was fine. We just hung it up when we got to our resort. If its the day before the wedding that you arrive and it does get some creases I was recommended to have it in the bathroom when having a shower so the steam straightens it out. Just make sure it doesnt get wet and dont leave it in the bathroom.

We didnt organise anything with the airline beforehand and didnt need any assistance from flight staff on the day.
